DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a survey of the most important Western European Classical literature written for flute from the Baroque to the present. These works will be analyzed in detail and examined within the context of instrumental development. Students will be required to have prepared class materials through listening and reviewing prescribed recordings, and paraphrasing articles for discussion in class.

Study-unit Aims:

The study- unit is designed to familiarize students with repertoire for flute The emphasis will be on understanding most especially the repertoire of the pre-1800 period as well as the changes in composition and the development of the flute.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) recognize key repertoire compositions, composers and national styles;
b) show understanding and ability to present examples within the historical period being discussed;
c) identify key repertoire works, national styles and leading composers from the pre-1800 period as they specifically relate to the flute;
d) place the developments in repertoire within a historical context.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) use some period instruments to gain personal insight into historical performance;
b) demonstrate basic working knowledge of period instruments and the differences with their modern counterparts;
c) discuss the developments in repertoire within a historical context.
