DESCRIPTION | A good level of vocal technique is expected prior to entering the unit. During the sessions the student will concentrate on the study of a selected repertoire, its performance and interpretation. Here the vocal repertoire will consist of operatic arias from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Students will also be guided to sing in the original language of the opera and will work on the characterization of the aria in the context of the entire opera’s plot. Study-unit Aims: This study unit aims to: a) develop a singer’s ability to perform a selection of repertoire based on operatic arias of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries; b) develop a singer’s interpretative skills in performance; c) develop a singer’s musicality in performance; d) develop a singer’s performance skills in terms of the critical style of the period in question. Learning Outcomes: Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) identify and perform a selected repertoire of operatic arias varying in type, style, mood and difficulty level; b) examine and depict vocally the dramatic characteristics of the operatic arias studied. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) interpret a selected operatic repertoire with a high level of performance and a good understanding of the character, drama and style; b) improve his/her performance skills through stage confidence and a better musical preparation; c) apply this knowledge in the performance of other similar operatic arias; d) apply a good vocal technique during performance of challenging works.
