Study-Unit Description

CODE MSP3110

TITLE Practice as Research in Music

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Music Studies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives a lot of importance to self-evaluation in relation to practice. It will address different aspects of performance linked to themes present in the chosen repertoire. These include issues that concern interpretation based on previous documents,manuscripts, and audio visual performances; the production of different timbres on a given instrument; the emotional and expressive outcomes produced by various interpretations of a single piece, passage, bar, chord, or even a single note; the use of timing in performance and the effective use of silence in performance or in a music composition; and the approach adopted by the performer to technically demanding passages on a given instrument.

The practice as research (PaR) mode of investigation brought forth in this study-unit will:
(a) draw on one's knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and harmonic components of a given musical work;
(b) consider the performer's own physiological aspects;
(c) test ways of dealing with a range or interrelated issues;
(d) find new ways of addressing diverse issues that emerge from the same process of performance through research and discussions with peers.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit should help students of performance realise that knowledge of performance practice can help them make intelligent and perhaps even 'authentic' and/or creative choices in their own practice. Such an experience should also serve as a source of research which is worth-documenting and writing about.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) realise that practice-led research in music, as in other performance disciplines, offers a wide range of opportunities to the artist-researcher;
b) recognise that performances are one of the ways in which performers in music learn new things about a musical work.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) reflect critically about his/her own practice;
b) document his/her own reflections that emerge out of the same practice process;
c) put into academic writing the reflections generated in and through the course of practice.
