DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives an overview of the main twentieth-century composers, their styles and techniques. Listening with score in hand constitutes a bulk of the content of the lectures. Students will be required to study some of the scores and submit their own work, influenced by what they study.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
(a) develop in students a critical and self-critical approach towards composition;
(b) provide students with the opportunity to acquire a technical baggage appropriate for composition at this level of studies;
(c) assist students become more aware of contemporary repertoire;
(d) help students plan, construct and evaluate pieces that have a meaningful structure;
(e) train students write analytical essays about composition in music at an academic level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) evaluate developments in twentieth-century and contemporary composition, in such a way as to be able to make well-informed appraisals of specific schools, composers and works;
b) explore various techniques used in the music of the period.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) design and compose small-scale compositions that consolidate his/her technical ability and originality, experimenting by making use of the stylistic features, techniques and procedures explored during the study of the repertoire presented during the course;
b) approach and present an analysis of his/her compositions.
