DESCRIPTION | The study-unit covers the approaches, techniques and knowledge needed to be able to compose art electronic music. It starts by covering the essential aspects of audio morphology and what a sound object is. It then goes on to cover field recording techniques. Then different digital audio processing techniques are covered to enable the student to manipulate the sound objects to create a coherent musical composition. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to give students the insight required and eventually the techniques to compose art electronic music in a coherent way. This entails putting in perspective the importance of the use of such aspects as space, motion and audio morphology as part and parcel of the composition process itself. This is different from the traditional method of composition where these aspects are either not used at all or used in a frivolous manner. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) build up an artistic composition using digital sound editing and processing techniques; b) analyse sounds emanating from sources other than musical instruments objectively; c) use stereophonic space creatively in electronic music composition; d) collect non-instrumental sounds and select some of them for use in electronic compositions; e) use digital manipulation to create a work based on a sort literary work (poem / prose); f) have knowledge of the main historical achievements in art electronic music. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) record and select non-instrumental sounds logically and artistically; b) process sound creatively; c) be aware of aesthetic factors to be taken into consideration when composing electronic music; d) develop aural skills to analyze whether a non-instrumental sound is suitable for developing within a piece; e) develop the artistic skills of bringing out the philosophies / thoughts in a short literary work (poem /prose) by manipulating an aural recording of the work itself.
