DESCRIPTION | This study-unit includes the preparation for the submission of a portfolio of compositions that should demonstrate the candidate's compositional skills. The study-unit also comprises the dissertation where the candidate exposes the structural skills and which shall be of not less than 20,000 and not more than 25,000 words in length, exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Study-unit Aims: The composition portfolio with the supporting document is ultimately designed to prepare the candidate to extend the knowledge and skills acquired during the taught Courses and Tutoring sessions through applying a keen sense of critical and aesthetic judgment that are involved in the compositional process. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop and extend their compositional techniques; - encourage creativity and imagination at Masters level; - be more critical in music composition; - acquire a deeper understanding of the compositional possibilities of instruments and ensembles and the symphonic orchestra. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - compose pieces on a medium in which compositional ideas are presented in a musically literate form; - develop an awareness of an appropriate range of contemporary compositional idioms; - expand his/her knowledge of a number of harmonic, contrapuntal and textural procedures developed during the 20th century. - present a portfolio of works which will shed light on the student's creative process and aesthetic judgment. - expound the candidate's personal creative work and to place this work in relationship to current and historical trends. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Students will be exposed to literature reviews, research materials and supplementary readings by the assigned tutor/s. |

ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination and Portfolio is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||||||
