DESCRIPTION M.Mus (Musicology)

The candidate is expected to complete a research dissertation of not less than 40,000 and not more than 50,000 words, with a value of 80 ECTS credits, preferably on a subject related to Maltese Music (sacred or secular) from the seventeenth century to the present.

Documentary evidence is to be found in any of the libraries or archives around Malta, especially the Archives of Mdina. The dissertation may include a critical edition of one (or more) substantial musical work(s) preferably by one (or more) Maltese composer(s). The title and research area shall be approved by the Music Studies Board. The candidate shall be assigned a tutor to supervise his/her research work and dissertation writing.

M.Mus (Ethnomusicology)

Candidates are expected to write a dissertation of not less than 40,000 and not more than 50,000 words in length (exclusive of notes, bibliography and appendices) with a value of 80 ECTS credits on a theme related to ethnomusicology. The choice of topic needs the approval of the Board of Studies. Every candidate will be assigned a tutor to supervise his (or her) research and the writing of the dissertation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

M.Mus (Musicology)

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) demonstrate in-depth knowledge on primary evidence available in archives around Malta;
(b) demonstrate a practical understanding and mastery of research techniques;
(c) deal with complex issues systematically and creatively; and
(d) to undertake doctoral research, should they so wish.

M.Mus (Ethnomusicology)

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of ethnomusicological theory;
(b) to demonstrate a practical understanding of how research techniques have been used to interpret the research topic; and
(c) to deal with complex issues systematically and creatively.

2. Skills:

M.Mus (Musicology)

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) develop their own research skills, with emphasis on data collection, document analysis and music manuscript cataloguing;
(b) communicate clearly orally and in writing about their research.

M.Mus (Ethnomusicology)

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) to develop their own research skills, with emphasis on (i) data collection and analysis, (ii) literature searching, (iii) refinement of a research topic and strategy, (iv) fieldwork techniques;
(b) to communicate effectively their research results.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
