DESCRIPTION | An overview of developments in Music Composition during the last century. The lectures will consist of presentations about orchestration techniques, listening, analysis and discussions of milestone works. Students will do their own research to contribute to their orchestration prowess. Study-unit Aims: To make Composition students familiar with techniques and different approaches to orchestration within the contemporary music scene. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate a thorough understanding of appropriate instrumental timbres, registers and combinations; - select, combine and blend different instruments in an orchestral context; - add suitable phrasing and articulation; 2. Skills: In addition to the evaluation and skills articulated in the learning outcomes, this study-unit develops the employability and lifelong learning skills of creativity, problem solving, deriving principle from practice and applying that knowledge to specific contexts.
