DESCRIPTION | It is understood that today performers are not only required to be proficient on their instrument but should also be capable of giving oral presentations as well as writing detailed analyses of works written for their instrument. in this respect, this study-unit provides the student with the skills required to describe and analyze, orally and in writing, major works from different styles and periods written for their instrument. Special emphasis will be given to style, texture and characteristics particular to the writing for the instrument. The works studied will go beyond the repertoire which the student will be working on in the practicum sessions on his/her instrument. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit is intended to complement the performance student's practicum sessions by examining and studying works which the student will not otherwise encounter during the course. Thus a more complete and wider knowledge of the repertoire for the student's instrument will be attained. The student will also be encouraged to get a more holistic understanding of the works that are studied and performed, and he/she will be able to communicate this understanding to the audience using different types of media. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Evaluate the various aspects of any work written for his/her instrument. • Understand how to prepare and analyze the structure, form, style and texture of a given work in writing. • Understand how to organize a public presentation on a given work, genre or composer. • Explore and assess different and unfamiliar areas of the repertoire for his/her instrument. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Research information about works from the repertoire in a detailed and organized manner. • Write analytical and descriptive essays on given works from the repertoire for the student's instrument. • Prepare and give a public presentation on a given work, genre or composer from the repertoire for the student's instrument. • Combine the information obtained through the research carried out with his/her interpretation of works being studied for performance.
