Study-Unit Description

CODE MSS1001

TITLE Physical Science

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Mathematics and Science Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit assumes no prior knowledge of Physics. The study-unit will include a qualitative and quantitative approach to learning about the physics concepts being studied. Through demonstrations, videos and problem solving tasks students are encouraged to think about basic physics concepts. These will be discussed in relation to everyday life and to other science subjects.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to introduce students to:
- the theoretical nature and essence of physical science;
- experiments and investigations related to physical science;
- practical applications of physics in everyday life; and
- physical science and its relation to the other sciences.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- describe and solve problems related to linear, circular and simple harmonic motion;
- explain and apply knowledge related to momentum, force, Newton's laws, work & energy, power and the conservation of momentum and energy;
- explain physical phenomena such as temperature, heat energy, modes of heat transfer, heating matter, kinetic theory of matter and thermodynamics;
- distinguish between longitudinal and transverse waves and describe their properties and phenomena related to these waves such as damping and resonance;
- differentiate between charge and current, voltage and emf and resistance and internal resistance and solve circuit problems related to these concepts;
- describe and explain different types of fields and other concepts related to field theory such as potential and potential energy;
- explain the concept of quantization as applied to phenomena such as light spectra and the photoelectric effect; and
- distinguish between stable and unstable nuclei and describe and explain radioactive phenomena, radioactive radiation, law of radioactive decay, nuclear energy and the mass-energy relation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- carry out demonstrations and practical work related to physical science; and
- use the knowledge they obtained from the study-unit to design tasks that can support learning in informal settings.
