DESCRIPTION This study-unit has been designed to train students to a basic level of immediate medical care, giving the required theoretical background and a wide range of practical situations to help students learn and retain valuable skills which will help them deal with emergency situations. The study-unit is designed around the three aims of emergency care, namely preserving life, preventing worsening of the condition and promoting recovery, which determine the objectives to be met during the study-unit, as appropriate at a basic level of immediate care.

The topics covered shall include:
- Essential principles of immediate care;
- Casualty assessment;
- Immediate care of the casualty with an altered level of consciousness;
- CPR & AED;
- Sudden illness;
- Bleeding, shock and serious trauma;
- Environmental emergencies; and
- Serious incidents, multiple casualty incidents and disaster situations.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to be able to deal with emergency and life-threatening situations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define an emergency situation, and discuss the provision of immediate care in view of the three aims of emergency care;
- discuss the roles of the first aider in an emergency situation and the chain of help;
- discuss the development of a clinical emergency with regards to airway, breathing and circulatory compromise;
- describe the appropriate actions for specific emergency conditions discussed during the study-unit; and
- describe the appropriate actions in a serious incident, an incident involving multiple casualties, or a disaster situation.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- assess an emergency situation quickly and calmly;
- protect the first aider, bystanders and casualties from any danger;
- assess the condition of all casualties and identify the need for immediate care;
- administer appropriate care for life-threatening injuries relative to airway, breathing and circulation; and
- deal with other major conditions, mainly altered level of consciousness, difficulty in breathing and chest pain, acute abdominal pain, bleeding and shock, soft tissue injuries and musculoskeletal injuries.
