DESCRIPTION Kelley et al. (2008) view the concept of social responsibility as "closely connected with many professions, providing an important construct for guiding the overall development of these professions and their members".

This study-unit focuses on a number of humanistic constructs, including human rights, cultural sensitivity and migration issues including nurse migration, vulnerable populations, social justice, and community engagement. The study-unit comprises lectures by professionals and observation visits by students in service areas related to the fields being studies as for ex. services for refugees, legal services related to health and health care services and community care providers /entities offering services to minority groups.

Study-unit Aims:

- To enable students to explore the meaning of the concept of social responsibility and its relevance to nursing practice;
- To promote awareness of the impact that societal, cultural and political factors have on health and wellness of a population;
- To differentiate between the needs of different minority groups;
- To introduce avenues/options of action that may address needs of a population; and
- To develop awareness of different referral routes for the appropriate management of needs of a population.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain potential sources/ causes of ill health arising around social realities;
- Compare the impact of different factors on social participation, well-being and health of a population;
- Infer various possible manifestations of ill health in different minority groups;
- Outline existent mechanisms and procedures which address societal needs;
- Describe the services employed by the public and private sectors and voluntary organisations/ NGOs in this regard example: Jesuit refugee services and Caritas Malta; and
- Discuss the various types of challenges and dilemmas associated with reforms in health systems and the humanization of care.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify individuals and minority groups who potentially experience challenges with maintaining health and wellness as a result of specific reasons, contexts and realities; and
- Employ referral strategies for the assessment of their needs and channels/opportunities for intervention.
