DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to the knowledge and learning skills that would enable a positive transition to university life, and lay the foundations for successful progression through the nursing undergraduate programme. Content is divided into three strands namely; becoming a student, becoming a nurse and self awareness, self care and well being. Becoming a student addresses the learning skills commensurate with academic expectations. Becoming a nurse provides an introduction to the evolution of nursing as a profession, the elements of nursing theories and corresponding issues. The third strand addresses the enhancement of self awareness and the development of skills that promote self care and well being and permeates throughout the study-unit content. Study-Unit Aims: - To introduce students to the available sources of knowledge and support that would facilitate integration into university life; - To assist students in acquiring learning skills for independent, academic study; - To introduce the students to nursing and help facilitate their initial socialisation into the nursing profession; - To encourage and support students in enhancing self awareness, in practicing self care and in adopting well being practices. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate effective navigation of the search engines, library sources and other sources of information available at the University of Malta; - Apply an academic style of writing to the assigned coursework, which includes correct utilisation of the stipulated referencing system; - Explain how the person, the environment, health and nursing are viewed by the main nursing theorists how these views guide patient assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and access the various support systems available to assist students experiencing challenging situations during their time as students at the University of Malta; - Adopt independent learning strategies using effective time management and stress coping skills; - Utilize self awareness strategies, self care behaviour and well being practices to enhance personal growth, resilience and professional behaviour.
