DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces the student to healthcare systems and healthcare provision through primary, secondary and tertiary care. It will additionally provide an introduction to the concept of an interdiscinary approach to care and other basic clinical concepts that are of relevance to all healthcare professionals and that are essential elements of effective healthcare systems and provision. Study-Unit Aims: - To provide an insight into the goals, characteristics and function of health systems and the three levels of healthcare (primary, secondary and tertiary); - To enable an understanding of the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to care and the principles underlying collaborative practice; - To introduce students to key concepts that are essential to patient and healthcare professionals' safety including infection prevention and control, documentation and occupational health and safety; - To introduce students to the role and application of Information Technology (IT) in healthcare. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the goals and characteristics of health systems and the three levels of healthcare; - Discuss the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to enable healthcare provision that is holistic and equitable; - Identify the principles underlying infection control and explain how/why these prevent transmission; - Discuss the importance of documentation in relation to patient safety and legal conformity; - Explain the role of IT in healthcare and provide examples of technological devices that are commonly used in healthcare. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop patient care plans that utilise an interdisciplinary approach to provide holistic care; - Apply patient safety measures such as: infection control strategies and accurate documentation.
