DESCRIPTION In this introductory placement study-unit, students will be required to visit a predetermined locality around Malta, on various occasions, over a period of 4 - 5 weeks. The purposes of these visits are to observe the locality's infrastructural and environmental characteristics, locate and retrieve published data / information about the locality's demographics (social and health), identify social and health-care community services within that locality, and engage with the community to gain an understanding of this specific community's social and health issues.

Students will be divided in small groups to complete this study-unit to introduce concepts related to teamwork. Towards the end of the placement students will be required to deliver a group-presentation (50%) and an individual reflective assignment (50%). Guidance will be provided to students throughout.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the varied social and health aspects, and the social dynamics within different communities;
- To provide students with the opportunity to observe, retrieve (relevant) published data and engage with people within a defined community;
- To guide students in developing a reflective attitude.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the specific characteristics of a defined community (incl. but not limited to the health, environment, infrastructure, transportation, mobility, demographics, social services, socio-economic etc...);
- Describe the health and social care services that are available within that community;
- List the general health and social care needs within a defined community;
- Discuss how individuals with varied health and social-care needs may interact and engage actively within the locality;
- Discuss issues related to teamwork and leadership as experienced while completing this study-unit.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and retrieve required information / data through observation, discussion and research from varied resources;
- Engage and collaborate with a team of peers towards a common objective;
- Engage in a process of critical reflection related to the study-unit objectives;
- Design and deliver a comprehensive presentation analysing their findings and experiences.
