Study-Unit Description

CODE NUR1234

TITLE Nursing Individuals with Mental Illness and Conditions

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is the theoretical underpinning of care offered within the mental health care setting, including acute and community care together with specialised areas such as substance misuse, child and old age mental health. It explores both the clinical and managerial aspects of care and considers special circumstances found within this clinical environment. For a practitioner to appreciate the full range of clinical opportunities available it is necessary to explore these in relation to the care setting and its individual biopsychosocial influences. In addition, systems and frameworks of care are more easily identified within this clinical sub-specialty and it is the intention of this unit to consider these against the processes of wellness and recovery. The unit is driven by the need to explore evidence-based materials and their application to clinical practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To provide students with information detailing the various types of conditions and mental health problems that may be found in the mental health setting;
- To consider the differences between the needs of various mental health patients;
