TITLE Introduction to Counselling Skills in Mental Health

DESCRIPTION The study-unit considers the processes at work within a counselling session, a counselling approach to interpersonal intervention and a daily relationship between patient and nurse.

It covers the main areas of counselling theory and the following practical elements:

- Addressing the client
- Humanistic therapy
- Behaviour therapies
- Systemic desensitization therapy
- Empathy and reflection
- Learning desirable behaviour
- Cognitive therapies
- Behavioural assignments
- Taking control
- Interpersonal therapy
- Family systems theory

Study-unit Aims:

To enable the student to develop insight into the science and theory of counselling the mentally disabled person.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe personal attitudes about individuals with mental illness and the influence these attitudes have on counselling provision;
- Describe the models of counselling theory;
- Discuss the indications for and the implementation of the various counselling modalities that can be implemented for the client/patient.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess the cognitive and emotional status and plan the appropriate counselling theory;
- Implement and evaluate the effects of counselling on the client/patient;
- Develop strategies for the implementation of family group and individual therapies for the acutely mentally ill.
