DESCRIPTION - This study-unit will establish the requirements and process of the dissertation (NUR3600) that is undertaken during the third year of the programme and lays the foundation that would enable the implementation of EBP in the clinical setting.
- The study-unit seeks to provide students with an understanding of evidence based practice (EBP) and its role in nursing and healthcare and furthermore, to equip them with the knowledge and skills that are required to effectively navigate the course of EBP.
- The study-unit will additionally address common barriers to the application of research findings in clinical practice and the strategies to overcome these. Moreover, an overview of the characteristics of the main research methods will be provided.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Develop students' understanding of EBP and its essential role in healthcare provision;
- Provide the knowledge that would enable them to develop the necessary skills to formulate a clinical question and carry out a comprehensive search for the appropriate literature;
- Introduce students to literature appraisal through an overview principle components of a research article;
- Help student identify common barriers to EBP and strategies to overcome these;
- Provide students with an overview of the characteristics of the main research designs.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define evidence-based practice and and discuss its importance to nursing practice;
- Demonstrate an understanding of various research methods;
- Discuss the importance of literature evaluation and compare the quality of evidence from studies of diverse research methods;
- Discuss the barriers to the implementation of research findings in clinical practice and strategies that could address these;

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Formulate an answerable clinical question;
- Conduct an extensive search for research evidence in relation to relevant clinical queries;
- Distinguish the principal components of a research article;
- Apply critical appraisal tools to appraise several research methodological studies;
- Further develop academic reading and writing skills.
