DESCRIPTION | This study-unit builds on, and consolidates the content of the unit entitled "Nursing the Individual in Varied Contexts 1" and introduces the student to the nursing care of patients in new settings, contexts and levels of complexity. It aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of these patients’ and their loved ones’ health-related needs within each context. It further aims to encourage critical reflection on how these specific needs and considerations could be effectively assessed, addressed and evaluated and to identify and implement a holistic patient-centred care plan to achieve this. Study-Unit Aims: - Introduce the student's understanding of the experiences, needs and care of patients and their loved ones in different settings and scenarios including primary and community care, maternity, paediatrics, cancer, end of life and infectious diseases; - To further develop the student’s knowledge of pertinent issues associated with the elderly and their care; - To provide the student with a deeper critical understanding of the principles of nursing and the application of these to effectively respond to patients and their families in the various contexts, settings and complexity levels. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe health and healthcare needs across the age continuum and identify effective responses to commonly encountered actual, or potential health deficits; - Describe health and healthcare needs across various settings and contexts including primary and tertiary, palliative approaches to care and mental health, and identify effective responses to commonly encountered actual, or potential problems; - Use frameworks of critical reflection to appraise principles, concepts and approaches to the nursing care of the individual in various contexts and settings as outlined above. These would involve consideration being given to issues such as ethics, autonomy, comfort etc., within each given context. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and apply theoretical and evidence-based tools for the identification of healthcare needs and/or deficits, of individuals throughout the age continuum and across diverse settings/contexts; - Develop a holistic patient-centered care plan through the utilisation of the phases of the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation & evaluation). This plan will show evidence of consideration being given to both the individuals’ stages of development, as well as the context of care; - Analyse case-study scenarios and identify appropriate interventions based on the principles of nursing practice, including evidence-based knowledge.
