DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills necessary for the provision of effective nursing care of individuals with commonly encountered acute/chronic illnesses/conditions throughout the health/illness trajectories and diverse settings. Various body systems will be addressed from both a medical and surgical perspective. In addition to the relevant literature, the students will be guided towards integrating knowledge from biological and behavioural sciences (introduced in previous study units), to enable safe and competent nursing care practice through an ADL framework and with consideration given to the relevant health and social contexts at all levels (individual, family, national & global). A problem-based learning approach will be adopted with a focus on enhancing the students' clinical reasoning and with the aim to encourage life-long learning through the concept of self-directed enquiry and reflective nursing strategies. Study-Unit Aims: - Provide students with an overview of nursing patients with surgical and medical needs across the primary, secondary and tertiary settings; - Guide students to draw on the biological and behavioural sciences and to integrate this knowledge with newly acquired information that would enable an understanding of common acute/chronic conditions in relation to various body systems; - Further develop students' ability to utilise an ADL framework to address patient needs, with a focus on specific conditions; - Provide students with a deeper understanding of clinical reasoning and its application in patient care. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the main elements associated with patients who are suffering from medical/ surgical conditions (general) and identify appropriate nursing responses; - Describe the pathophysiological basis of common acute/chronic conditions; - Critically discuss the impact that an ADL framework would have on the management of the ill individual and develop an individualised care that gives evidence of clinical reasoning skills. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out a 'holistic' assessment of individuals with acute/chronic illness that elicits the psychosocial, physical, functional and spiritual needs; - Plan evidence-based interventions by gathering data from various sources, including health records, investigations and patient/relative interviewing; - Identify and apply validated measurement tools to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
