DESCRIPTION The student will observe practice and may carry out basic nursing care under the required supervision during the clinical placements. Practice will take place in the clinical setting and possibly in the clinical labs.
Study-unit Aims:

At the end of this study-unit, the student will reach the required level of competence, as specified in the Practice Portfolio.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Professional and Personal Development:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss own identified learning needs;
- Incorporate feedback to develop new learning needs;
- Show responsibility & accountability for for broad general nursing procedures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Show an awareness of the importance of a positive climate for communication before, during and following an intervention;
- Use language that is appropriate to patients'/relatives'/significant others' level of understanding;
- Communicate using basic listening skills;
- Develop professional relationships with other staff members;
- Produce basic documentation which is legible, concise and accurate;
- Show ability to communicate re. patient/s' basic needs to other staff members;
- Identify client/s' needs based on general assessment;
- Collect information about client/s from primary and secondary sources;
- Create goals that are client-centred, realistic and measurable;
- Participate in general nursing care based on client/s' needs;
- Carry out stipulated interventions in a safe manner;
- Understand the basic concept of ethics in practice.
