DESCRIPTION | In line with the referred EU directive, through a series of lectures this study-unit has been developed to foster students' competence in empowering individuals, families and groups towards healthy lifestyles and self care on the basis of being able to diagnose independently the nurse care required and to plan, organise and implement such care in a professional manner, drawing upon the acquired ability to work effectively with other players in the health sector including the competence to train, give advise, instruct and support both clients/ patients and other health personnel. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to equip students with the competence to advise, instruct and support clients/ patients towards meaningful self care, whereby the client/ patient effectively engages and is empowered to an optimal extent. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - To know how to empower individuals, families and groups towards healthy lifestyles; - To enable self care of the client/ patient; - To diagnose independently the nurse care required and to plan, organise and implement such care in a professional manner; and - To work effectively with other players in the health sector against a clear understanding of the importance to train, give advise, instruct and support both clients/ patients and other health personnel. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess a client's/ patient's needs for effective self care; - Plan and implement a strategy and measures which will translate into effective self care; - Report and refer accordingly to other players in a case scenario; - Teach, advise and instruct and support the patient/ client across a plan; and - Teach, advise and instruct and support other health professionals and family/relatives.
