DESCRIPTION | The study-unit begins with a discussion of factors common to all patients and/or emergency departments such as primary/secondary assessment, triage, documentation and crisis responses. The remaining units presented as case studies focus on acute illnesses and injuries affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, neurological, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and neurological systems for patients requiring emergency services. Special considerations for elderly and children are also presented. The case studies (including illnesses and injuries) will be grouped according to the patient's presenting complaint or predominant physiologic abnormality. Using a combination of lectures, case studies and working in groups, students will gain an overview of the changing and challenging world of accident and emergency nursing. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to develop an understanding of the principles of emergency nursing care of the acutely ill and injured adult and child through a practice based approach. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the changing and challenging world of accident and emergency nurses; - Develop an understandng of a variety of medical conditions (varying from major and life threatening illnesses or injuries to minor conditions or injuries; - Be knowledgeable on how to manage such patients. 2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out the primary and secondary survey; - Identify vulnerable groups of people who utilise the emergency department; - Describe interventions of care required according to various emergency illnesses or injuries.
