DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides an introduction to anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition and nursing care in relation to disorders of renal and gastrointestinal system. It introduces students to transcultural, legal and ethical issues in relation to death and dying, attitudes to death and dying and care of terminally ill persons and their families. This study-unit also allows students to integrate the knowledge acquired over the three year programme to apply the concepts of patient assessment and discharge planning. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study unit is to: - Provide students with an introduction to anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology and nursing care in relation to disorders of renal and gastrointestinal system; - Ensure an understanding of the holistic care of terminally ill persons and their families; and - Ensure an understanding of the patient assessment and discharge planning. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to show an understanding of: - The anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and holistic care of persons suffering from disorders including renal failure, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders and peptic ulcers and the care of terminally ill persons and their families; - The care of patients in the pre, intra and post-operative period in relation to the identified surgical procedures including cholecystectomy, gastrectomy, colectomy and AP resection and stoma care; - The legal and ethical issues surrounding organ transplantation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide appropriate care to terminally ill persons and their families; - Take appropriate infection control measures in relation to gastroenteritis; - Provide holistic care to patients undergoing surgery over the continuum of the peri-operative period for persons undergoing the above mentioned surgeries; and - Carry out a holistic patient assessment and plan for patient discharge.
