DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to provide students with the opportunity to address the specific needs in developing clinical skills of students, at an individual level. Students develop their ability to describe, reflect upon and critically analyse their own practice and clinical skills. They have the opportunity to investigate selected areas of practice by engaging in an exploration of an issue that arises from their own practice area. Aspects of study include evidence-based practice, advanced or independent nursing practice and specialisation. This study unit includes a process where by the nature and topic of the study unit is determined by the student and the lecturer.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study-unit is to enable students to demonstrate their ability to review and evaluate their clinical practice and explicitly apply learning outcomes according to the identified weaknesses in practice, and to critically reflect upon the manner in which this learning process has influenced their practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- critically evaluate competing rationales informing practice;
- discuss technical, social, physiological aspects of the skills selected in a simple manner
- justify own actions in relation to the skills with a sound theoretical background

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- work effectively with others;
- perform the skills selected in a proficient manner
- develop critical skills to evaluate their own learning;
- reflexive skills; and
- subject-specific skills determined by the independent study undertaken.
