TITLE Perioperative Nursing Care Elective Practice Placement

DESCRIPTION Through this practical elective study-unit, students will be exposed to the various settings which form part of the theatre surgical area in which persons undergoing surgical interventions (major or minor) are cared for. Through this exposure students will consolidate the theoretical knowledge they are learning in the concurrent theoretical perioperative nursing study-unit and learn to apply this knowledge to practice.

The student must complete a total of 240 hours (distributed evenly over 13 weeks) for this placement.

In order to be eligible for assessment the student must:

- complete a minimum of 190 hours by the 13th week and;
- satisfactorily complete the documentation required for year 3 (the Practice Portfolio).

Study-Unit Aims:

The overall aim of this study-unit is to provide final year nursing students with the opportunity to observe and practice under supervision, the various phases of care of the patient undergoing surgery across various perioperative contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical concepts relating to the various stages of perioperative care;
- Explain the continuum of heamodynamic stability-instabilty and the subsequent care to ensure optimal care;
- Discuss the variety of surgical procedures (major or minor), modalities and techniques; and
- Assess risk factors relating to patient care at various stages of the perioperative process.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Safely admit a patient to the pre-operative area under supervision of a qualified nurse through taking a comprehensive handover from the ward nurse, obtaining data from the patient's file as well as interviewing the patient as required;
- Mitigate safety risks with appropriate and timely interventions;
- Participate under supervision of a qualified nurse in aspects of nursing practice in the pre-operative, intra-operative and postoperative phases of surgery;
- Strengthen and develop a number of nursing skills related to the clinical area;
- Safely discharge a patient under supervision of a qualified nurse from the recovery area to a ward nurse through a complete and holistic handover; and
- Engage actively with members of the multidisciplinary team through effective communication skills.
