TITLE Rehabilitation Care Elective Practice Placement

DESCRIPTION During this practical study-unit, each student will have the opportunity to observe and care for a range of patients within a rehabilitation setting. The placements that student may attend during this practicum may include (but not limited to):

- In-patient rehabilitation wards;
- Day Hospital.

The student must complete a total of 240 hours (distributed evenly over 13 weeks) for this placement. In order to be eligible for assessment the student must:

- complete a minimum of 190 hours by the 13th week and
- satisfactorily complete the documentation required for year 3 (the Practice Portfolio).

Study-Unit Aims:

- To familiarise students with different rehabilitation services provided in Malta;
- To give the possibility to students to work under supervision with different members of the rehabilitation team;
- To enable students with the required skills to care for persons requiring different rehabilitation services in a safe and compassionate way; and
- To provide students with the opportunity to further improve their rehabilitation skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the role of different members of the rehabilitation team;
- Understand the role of the nurse within the rehabilitation team; and
- Critically discuss the contribution of rehabilitation services as the link between the acute setting and the community or long-term care

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out a set of rehabilitation skills in a safe and compassionate way;
- Identify physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of persons requiring rehabilitation and develop a plan of care;
- Reflect about the care being provided in the settings allocated to and critically identify ways how it can be improved; and
- Work in geriatric, stroke and adult rehabilitation wards, at the Day Hospital department or in other rehabilitation units/services, in order to be exposed to a continuity of settings where rehabilitation takes place.
