DESCRIPTION This is a practical study-unit designed to expand the student’s understanding of other cultures, life experiences, values and perspectives. The study-unit will focus on four main topics:

1. Diverse Populations: this topic is about understanding the different ethnic groups in our country;
2. Values, Attitudes, Behaviours: this session is designed to help students identify values and attitudes cultivated over time that shape and refine new experience. Some, when coupled with a lack of awareness or insensitivity, can produce confrontation, anger and even violence. It is imperative for health professionals to recognize and manage such potential differences;
3. Discrimination and Power: the sessions dealing with this topic are designed to help students become effective team leaders by distinguishing the difference between discrimination and power;
4. Sexual Harassment: the sessions dealing with this topic are designed to help students identify behaviour that might be considered as sexual harassment, explain the consequences, and to describe their role and responsibility in creating an academic and work environment free of sexual harassment.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit is based on two fundamental pillars, namely personal growth and professional attention:

1. On the personal growth level, the unit aims at challenging students with evaluating and being open to a deeper understanding of oneself, thus a better communication with themselves and their own experience;
2. On the professional attention level, this unit aims at exploring the dynamics of communication with others, especially with one’s patients and other professionals at work. Deeper insight, reflective feedback, congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathic work help lay out this second component.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Students will engage in a number of techniques and workshops through which they are challenged to gain deeper awareness about their lives and daily experiences;
2. Students will explain how their sensitivity training has impacted them, and how it may also affect others within their care, through a reflective assignment.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Be more reflective and conscious of, and congruent with one’s own emotive experience;
2. Communicate unconditional positive regard to others, especially patients in one’s care;
3. Be empathic with others, through the use of the self as an instrument of understanding and healing.
