DESCRIPTION This practical study-unit comprising 400 hours of clinical observation or observation and practice, is offered to students registered in European Universities which have a bilateral agreement with the University of Malta under the ERASMUS exchange program. Students visiting Malta will need to be nominated by their educational institution according to the bilateral agreement between both Universities. Nominated students will be accepted, following the approval of the University of Malta, to specific clinical placement allocated during the referred period. The student will be allocated to a clinical area available across the health care system. During the clinical placement, the student may engage in observing or/and practicing nursing care. Any nursing care delivery will be allowed under the direct and constant supervision of a mentor or a qualified nurse. The student's practice competence will be assessed by the allocated mentor and link lecturer allocated by the University of Malta

Study-unit Aims:

At the end of this study-unit, the student would have experienced delivery of care which is consistent in quality and independence to the level of studies of the student, pertaining to a specific clinical area of practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify his/her own personal learning needs in an unfamiliar clinical setting;
- identify his/her own limitations;
- acknowledge personal and professional boundaries in an unfamiliar clinical setting;
- identify broad learning needs relating to the clinical setting;
- identify means of communication with the multidisciplinary team and patients in an unfamiliar health care organisation;
- show understanding of:
    • The patient's condition requiring care;
    • Medications prescribed to the patient in relation to the effects and side effects;
    • The nursing process;
    • Code of practice.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- distinguish between social and professional communication;
- communicate with the members of staff;
- demonstrate awareness about the use of verbal/non-verbal methods of communication with patients and staff in a different culture;
- show awareness of the importance of collaborating with the health care team;
- differentiate the different roles of the multidisciplinary team in an unfamiliar health care organisation;
- assess patients' needs;
- prioritize the care to be given to a group of patients;
- delegate care appropriately to other health care professionals;
- provide education to clients and junior students if the opportunity is available;
- develop skills to work with decreasing supervision within known environments and skills;
- demonstrate good time management skills;
- evaluate the effectiveness of care implemented and suitably adapt the plan of care according to the outcomes of the evaluation.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Qualifications: The students should be registered students at the university with which the University of Malta has a bilateral agreement through ERASMUS program.
