DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed for ERASMUS students and international students pursuing clinical practice within the health and social care system in Malta. Students are asked to compare clinical practice in Malta, as an EU member state, to practice in their own country of origin and other health and social care systems. The impact of the ERASMUS exchange/clinical experience on their own development as student nurses or qualified nurses is focused upon. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is for the student to experience health care in a different country to their own, and be able to compare the health care system in their home country to that of the host country. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the culture of their host country and regional area; - Describe the health care system and the major health care issues of the host country and/or region; - Compare the nursing care and nursing system on the unit/area where he/she is working to the equivalent in his/her own country; - Discuss which work practices/ideas could be transferred to the home country to improve nursing/health care and how these could be implemented; - Discuss the impact of this experience on his/her knowledge and nursing practice. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Gather information through personal experience in a specific clinical unit/area in an overseas country; - Carry out informal interviews with key informants to obtain relevant information; - Draw information from official documentation and where necessary statistics.
