DESCRIPTION This study-unit draws on the content being provided in past and concurrent study units and aims to provide an introduction to advanced-level clinical practice roles, across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice namely, management and leadership, education, research, and clinical practice by further developing the students' critical understanding and the complex decision-making skills . Nurse clinicians from various healthcare settings and in various roles, will be invited to critically discuss their specialist roles with the students (e.g. Public health, infection prevention and control, cardiac, forensic, directorate of nursing etc), with an aim to develop the students' critical understanding of the diverse clinical roles and an awareness of the associated responsibilities.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Provide an overview of advanced-level clinical practice roles by fostering an understanding of the complex decision-making skills across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice namely, management and leadership, education, research, and clinical practice;
- Explore and evaluate the status of advanced nursing in national and international contexts through the provision of a critical analysis of research, policy, leadership roles in health care practice, education and research;
- Enable the student to apply and integrate their knowledge and skills to support problem identification, specialty knowledge and skill development in areas such as but not confined to, decision-making and problem solving in the context of advancing nursing practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define advanced nursing practice and describe the roles of scope of this practice;
- Describe the key attitudes, values, skills and knowledge that are essential to advanced nursing practice;
- Critically evaluate the status of advanced nursing practice in national and international contexts and reflect on controversial issues;
- Describe the local legal frameworks related to nursing registration and the role of the governing, local regulatory bodies;
- Distinguish between specialist nurses and nurses working in speciality areas.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate decision-making and problem solving skills, relevant to advanced nursing practice;
- Identify and develop personalised career pathways/ladders;
- Demonstrate leadership skills, in the context of advanced clinical practice.
