DESCRIPTION This study-unit invites students to explore key contemporary issues in health that affect people across the globe, with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This study-unit will bring in expertise from across the health services and digital health sectors to focus on aspects of global health, including health systems, gender issues, global health in humanitarian settings, planetary health, emerging infectious diseases,diversity dimensions and multicultural considerations, health equity, migration, health literacy, and health advocacy, universal health coverage and One-health.

A major focus of this study unit is for students to critically reflect on a contemporary issue of their choice and present their arguments in an open discussion/ debate.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Develop basic knowledge related to contemporary issues in populations and healthcare practices, within a local and international context;
- Develop a critical awareness of the relevance and impact of contemporary issues to the nurse and to nursing practice;
- Provide the student with an understanding of risk assessment;
- Foster a learning environment that would create an awareness of the importance of lifelong learning to effective healthcare practices.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate the impact of current societal and healthcare trends on health, healthcare delivery and healthcare systems;
- Examine global health systems and the factors that influence care, policy decisions and health disparities in diverse populations;
- Analyze the impact of the environment, the climate and human health on various aspects of healthcare delivery and utilisation;
- Examine the roles of national and global regulatory bodies in the provision of quality healthcare;
- Define risk assessment and identify the tools to facilitate this;
- Use technological systems and appropriate software to access global information about telemedicine, e-health and m-health.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate analytical skills on contemporary issues in health through critical discussion;
- Identify target areas for improvement through a risk assessment and analysis and determine what processes can be modified to improve outcomes;
- Utilise critical reflection of new learning to devise appropriate strategies to deliver quality improvement in a specific area of interest.
