DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is complementary to other concurrent study units and aims to expose the students to social realities within a particular area of interest and to encourage reflection on how these realities impact health and health outcomes. To achieve this aim, the study unit will include at least one, and a maximum of two, short practice learning experiences in health and/or social care settings (approximately 60 hours). This/These experience/s will provide the student with tangible examples of diverse life situations and circumstances. Practice learning in health care settings may include the Child development assessment unit, the Outpatients services at MDH, shadowing Navigator nurses/Practice nurses across the public health services, observation of nursing practices across specialist services, School nurses, Nutrition nurses, and Tissue viability nurses. Settings that are related to providing social support will also be organised and these include NGOs pertaining to Mental Health, rehabilitation and correctional services, care services, social services, migration, bereavement management, literacy, health advocacy, universal health coverage, environment and One-health. Study-Unit Aims: - Develop a good understanding of diverse population groups and the impact of psychosocial issues on their quality of life and their health; - Provide the student with an understanding of the roles that nurses assume to provide specialist nursing services, amongst others; - Develop a critical awareness of the social services available and of their effectiveness in addressing the populations' needs; - Grow academically, professionally, personally through experiential learning and develop a civic awareness. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Examine the scope and purpose of services that aim to address social and healthcare needs and their effectiveness; - Demonstrate a basic understanding of the organisational aspects of a service, including quality assurance measures and the governance of its operations; - Describe users'/ patients expectations and diverse perspectives. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate analytical skills on contemporary issues in health through critical discussion; - Identify target areas for improvement through a risk assessment and analysis and determine what processes can be modified to improve outcomes; - Utilise critical reflection on new knowledge in a specific area of interest, to devise appropriate strategies to deliver quality improvement.
