DESCRIPTION Throughout this study-unit students will have the opportunity to refresh and update the practical nursing skills acquired throughout the course. Students will be required to independently engage with online resources, published literature and clinical resources to research the most recent guidelines and procedures. Students will also have a space to engage in discussion with colleagues and instructors on the practical application of clinical procedures and guidelines in real-life clinical practice. Throughout the study-unit students will also be encouraged to identify (with guidance) any gaps in competence and confidence in their practical skill-set, and this gap will be addressed throughout this study-unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to consolidate the practical nursing skills that students acquired throughout the course, and to address gaps in students' practical skill-set. This study-unit will also introduce students to the concept of continuing professional development, as an individual professional responsibility.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the professional & clinical responsibility for continuing professional development;
- Discuss evidence-based practice with regards to practical nursing skills and procedures;
- Highlight updates in practical nursing skills and procedures;
- Discuss patient safety, risk and hazard mitigation;
- Discuss the professional & legal considerations related to conducting practical nursing skills and procedures;
- Demonstrate knowledge related to the most common practical nursing skills expected on point of registration.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Independently identify any gaps in their own individual skill base;
- Independently search for, locate and identify updates in clinical guidelines;
- Conduct simple and complex practical nursing skills independently and without guidance;
- Maintain safety while conducting simple and complex practical nursing skills and procedures, and identify risk of clinical error;
- Abide to legal requirements when conducting practical nursing skills and procedures;
- Supervise a peer conducting simple skills in a simulated safe environment, and provide feedback.
