DESCRIPTION | The study-unit addresses the relationship between crime and mental health and explores the nursing skills required to work with patients described as being the 'forensic mentally ill'. Major differences between these patients and others from acute psychiatry and dual diagnosis specialties are considered. The co-morbid nature of crime and mental illness is also placed in relation to the agenda for public safety vs healthcare. The second part of the unit explores psychiatric and mental health nursing skills, roles and responsibilities associated with working with this patient group. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are: - To explore the relationship between crime and mental health; - To establish the types of clinical presentations associated with forensic psychiatry; - To consider the roles and responsibilities of nurses working in forensic care. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appreciate the difference between forensic patients and those from other co-morbid specialties such as acute admission psychiatry and dual diagnosis; - Place the tension between public safety (forensics) and psychiatry (mental illness) into context; - Consider the needs of this patient population; - Identify the roles of the nurse working in this specialty. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Tansfer the skills associated with working with forensic patients to their work with patients from other specialist areas in mental health care.
