Study-Unit Description

CODE NUR4327

TITLE Theories of Counselling and Psychotherapy

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Mental Health

DESCRIPTION These study-units (NUR3321 and NUR3323) introduce the student to each of the elements of group dynamics and counselling in group settings, during the first year of the programme. This unit links these components together and adds the additional element of psychotherapy, contrasting the approaches and methodologies from the different schools. It therefore serves to expand the basic concepts and provide students with the opportunities to select alternative approaches within their practice that would otherwise not be available to them.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable the student to develop further insight into the psychological theories of helping for the mentally disabled person;

To increase the students' understanding of the methodological options available within a clinical setting for various different diagnostic types;

To link the separate elements of group dynamics, counselling and psychotherapy for therapeutic interventions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Identify the contributing factors in the development of:
- counselling skills
- group dynamic skills
- psychotherapeutic skills;

Describe the processes by which decisions are made concerning the suitability for delivery of a chosen approach to 'talking therapies'.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess the cognitive and emotional status of a person with a mental health problem for whom psychological therapies may be appropriate;
- Plan for the appropriate person centred intervention and/or counselling and psychotherapeutic skill;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen intervention;
- Work with clients to determine their involvement in decision making and evaluation of progress.
