DESCRIPTION This study-unit is aimed at creating awareness of the various physical, psychological and social factors that may influence the health of the elderly living in the community. It enables students to identify related needs and evaluate the extent by which such needs are being met by local services. The study unit evaluates the role of the nurse in the prevention and management of the various health related events which are addressed. It will consist of some taught sessions, but will mostly involve self directed study. The work which students carry out in their clinical placement will be related to a topic area and presented to the group so that some of the sessions will be in the form of presentations.

Objectives:

At the end of the study-unit, students will be able to:
- Identify factors which may influence health needs of the elderly living in the community
- Evaluate the role of various services, including nursing services, in meeting wholistic needs of the elderly, through primary, secondary and tertiary preventive care.
- Understand the role of informal carers in the care of the elderly, its limitations and possible ways of empowering carers.
