DESCRIPTION | This study-unit seeks to introduce the students to different leadership theories, help them identify the core characteristics of effective leaders within health care organisations as well as developing leadership skills. The latter includes effectively communicating their vision for the health care setting in which they are working and developing strategic plans to achieve that vision. This study-unit also covers change theory and methods in the obstacles and challenges which must be overcome when instituting change. Study-unit aims The aim of this study-unit is to develop students’ knowledge and skills in relation to leadership within a health care setting. Learning outcomes 1. Knowledge and understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to show an awareness of and critically discuss: 1. The main leadership theories; 2. The difference between leadership and management; 3. The main theories in relation to change. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Clearly communicate his/her vision for an identified health care setting/organisation; 2. Develop a strategy in order to achieve that vision; 3.
