DESCRIPTION This practice based study-unit enables prospective students to gain practical knowledge and skills in relation to this specialised field of practice. Students will be given the opportunity to observe and practice under the supervision of tissue viability nurses and other health care professionals working in different health and social care settings. This enables students to critically evaluate the procedures used in different health care settings in relation to the prevention and management of wounds. It will ensure that these students will be competent in the assessment of patients with complex aetiologies and will be able to manage their needs accordingly. The students will also be able to identify patients who need advanced wound therapy including: debridementment, Total Negative wound therapy, Maggot Therapy, compression therapy, and other treatment managment carried out by other colleagues including referral to the vascular, dermatology, and podiatry team.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide prospective students with clinical experience in relation to prevention and management of skin and wound care across the different hospitals, clinics, community (domicilary) and residential/nursing homes in Malta.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the services related to tissue viability available in Malta and Gozo;
- Distinguish the care processes and operational procedures used in the assessment and management of wounds between different health and social care settings;
- Explain the referral process for patients needing other related services;
- Describe the prevention and managment of the most common types of wounds including: leg ulceration, pressure injuries, post operative wounds;
- Explain the assessment and documentation process of patients with wounds;
- Distinguish the differences of leg ulcer aetiology and their managment;
- Explain the intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting pressure injury;
- Describes medico-legal implications related to wound managment.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team and the patient and/or family under the supervision of an assigned mentor;
- Carry out wound assessments under the supervision of an assigned mentor;
- Write a structured and holistic report on patient including a correct description of the wound and its management;
- Write a detailed referral form for the related professionals;
- Demonstrate knowledge of using a doppler ultrasound, interpreting its results and explaining them to the patient/relatives;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the topical creams and dressings used in wound management;
- Define when advanced wound therapy is needed;
- Demonstrate compression therapy understanding and skill application;
- Demonstrate the application of Total Negative therapy and Maggot therapy.
