DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to introduce the students to different leadership theories, help them identify the core characteristics of effective nurse leaders within health care organisations as well as developing leadership skills. The latter includes effectively communicating their vision for the health care setting in which they are working and developing strategic plans to achieve that vision. This study-unit also covers change theory and methods in the obstacles and challenges which must be overcome when instituting change.This study unit will expose the student to the theory and practice of nurse leadership.Through in-depth disussion and analysis it aims to prepare them to address the opportunities and challenges in their career in an effort to influence practice as health care professionals in whatever field, sector or activity that may engage in.

The study-unit coordinators will facilitate learning through a series of lectures, workshops and seminars. Students will be invited to access online resources and activities which will be found on the area of the VLE which is designated to this study-unit.

Global and national nurse leaders will be invited to inspire and motivate the students and seminars will be designed to provide fora for discussion and networking.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to develop students’ knowledge and skills in relation to leadership within a health care setting.

To encourage students to analyse and assess their 'Self' as a person, a clinician and a leader and to empower them to becoming leaders in nursing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise contemporary views on leadership and decision making in organisations with a special focus on evidence based management.
-Appreciate ethical leadership and practices both from a local and global perspective.
-Explain the social and cultural issues surrounding leadership in health care contexts and settings.
- Appreciate the knowledge and understanding of developing policy and finding solutions to factors that hinder the progress and successful completion of policy development.
- Recognise the importance of understanding the process of change and seeking advice and feedback when implementing it in practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop the skills required to be an effective leader inluding to clearly communicate is/her vision for an identified health care setting/organisation, develop a strategy in order to achieve that vision, and identify the main obstacles to achieving his/her vision and ways to overcome those obstacles.
-Develop the right attitude towards leadership.
- Initiate a process of reflective practice through an understanding of themselves, their work environment and the organisation they work in.
- Formulate clear, focussed and succinct areas that need change in their work place and in the nursing profession.
- Discuss rationales for the need for strong nurse leadership
- Adopt a systems approach to proposing change or a service
- Outline appropriate plans of action
- Practice ethical leadership.
