DESCRIPTION This is the study-unit which introduces the student to the occupational therapy profession. The study-unit is intended to help the student establish an initial professional identity; a perspective on the historical origins both internationally and locally; changes in professional perspectives and paradigms as the knowledge evolved; the profession's position in the health care milieu and an overview of client populations seeking occupational therapy services.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Define occupational therapy;
- Establish a formal structure for the profession;
- Give an overview of the philosophical underpinnings;
- Give an overview of the historical origins and development internationally and locally;
- Discuss the changing professional perspectives and paradigms in the previous century;
- Give an overview of knowledge development and current views of knowledge organisation in the profession.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the nature of occupational therapy;
- Know a number of definitions of the profession and characteristics of definitions;
- Be familiar with the salient historical events which have characterised the development of this health care profession;
- Understand changing professional perspectives and their influence on the identity of the profession both locally and internationally;
- Have an overview of the different client populations serviced by the occupational therapy profession.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Articulate the nature of occupational therapy and identify the extent, quality and contribution of this profession in the health care field;
- Identify the range of client groups benefitting from occupational therapy services;
- Articulate an understanding of the nature of human occupation, occupational dysfunction and the various ways in which occupation can be used as a therapeutic medium.
