DESCRIPTION | The study-unit includes an overview of the conditions most often encountered by occupational therapists during their practice in a mental health setting. Lectures focus on the possible occupational therapy interventions that are suitable for each condition. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Review the major conditions encountered in an occupational therapist's psychosocial practice; - Identify problems that need to be addressed by the occupational therapist for each psychosocial condition using AOTA's uniform terminology framework; - (performance areas, components and contexts); - Set short term and long term goals for each condition being reviewed; - Discuss and analyze different treatment methods and media/techniques used by the OT for each individual condition; - When provided with a case scenario be able to identify major problem areas, set short term/long term goals and devise a proper treatment plan/strategy founded on empirical evidence thus being able to select judiciously the most suitable and eclectic mix of occupational therapy media and methods. Content: - Substance Misuse Disorders; - Drug and alcohol abuse/misuse; - Schizophrenia and related disorders; - Mood disorders (Affective Disorders); - Borderline/Personality Disorders; - Anxiety Disorders and PTSD; - Eating disorders.
