TITLE Advanced Application of Theory in Paediatric Practice

DESCRIPTION The student will become knowledgeable about the various treatment approaches used in paediatric occupational therapy as well as gain practical experience of treating children with different problems. They will become familiar with the various forms of assessment that are used in paediatric occupational therapy. Students will learn about record keeping, report writing and programme planning. The importance of working with other professionals will also be emphasised. Students will be briefed on how to provide intervention using a caseload as well as a workload approach. This will include setting priorities and criteria for intervention in home school and community settings. Students will be guided to develop clinical reasoning skills in paediatric practice.The focus remains on children, their occupations and the context in which they participate with the ultimate aim of inclusion in society.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Be knowledgeable about the different approaches and models of service provision in paediatric Occupational Therapy Practice with children and the aims of intervention;
2. Be able to outline basic problem areas and aims of treatment with children having different diagnosis and occupational challenges;
3. Be able to write out general goals;
4. Be knowledgeable about the different frames of reference in Paediatric Occupational Therapy that can be used when treating paediatric clients and start to relate these to practice;
5. Be knowledgeable about the different treatment approaches that exist and confident in the basic practice of such approaches. The different approaches used to work with children in different settings such as the clinical environment and school based settings will be discussed;
6. Be able to identify challenges, establish treatment aims, set long and short term goals;
7. Plan and implement a therapy programme.
