DEPARTMENT | Occupational Therapy | ||||||||
DESCRIPTION | This unit will give an overview of clinical reasoning within the context of treatment planning as well as intervention in physical dysfunction. This is intended to be a synthesis of students' previous theoretical knowledge and clinical experience. The rest of the unit will involve an in-depth consideration of major diagnostic categories which fall under the domain of concern of Occupational Therapy. Specific conditions are associated with particular patterns performance skills and client factor dysfunction. A knowledge of such patterns helps to guide practice as it indicates circumscribed problem clusters which, in turn, facilitate the selection of specific evaluation and treatment strategies. Diagnostic categories determine specific precautionary and prognostic factors which the practitioner require first hand knowledge of in order to prescribe treatment which is the most effective and does not run counter to the natural healing processes. Objectives: The student is expected to: - Overview clinical reasoning and problem solving - Describe the aetiology and prevalence of the conditions - Highlight the associated deficits and impairments in occupational performance - Describe prognostic factors in context of age and occupational performance - Draw up evaluation and treatment strategies associated with the diagnostic category Contents: - Clinical Reasoning in Physical Dysfunction and Physical Disability - Overview of Occupational Therapy in the following conditions:     - Fractures     - Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis     - Amputations     - Burns     - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease     - CVA     - Traumatic Brain Injury     - Spinal Cord Injury     - Multiple Sclerosis and Degenerative Neurological Conditions Reading list: - Trombly C A.
