DESCRIPTION This study-unit will aim to provide an overview of Occupational Therapy practice in Geriatrics, the implications of the ever-increasing elderly population and the Occupational Therapists role in various contexts. This study-unit encourages participation through group projects, group activities, role play and brain storming exercises. Cases examples are used during lectures to stimulate discussion. Lecture handouts and required reading is provided.

Objectives:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the demographic problems leading to an ever increasing elderly population;
- Gain insight into the theories of ageing;
- Understand policies and strategies related to the elderly;
- Be able to assess, plan goals and treat the geriatric population;
- Understand the OT role with the elderly in various contexts;
- Have an overview of all the services available for the elderly;
- Understand the subject of terminal illness, death, dying and bereavement;
- Participate in brain storming, group activities, case studies and role play;
- Improve their presentation skills.

- Palliative CareThe family and community;
- The terminally ill patient;
- Death and Dying: the process of dying;
- Grieving and Bereavement: coping techniques.
