DESCRIPTION | This unit will very briefly overview the manifestations of various conditions and OT assessment and intervention so as to address occupational dysfunction using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework. Content: Cardiovascular Disease: Heart failure,valvular heart disease, Ischaemic Heart Disease (including angina and myocardial infarction) and hypertension Respiratory Disease: Respiratory infections, cystic fibrosis, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, respiratory failure, tumours, pulmonary embolism, occupational lung disease, sarcoidosis and pleural disease Diabetes: Classification and aetiology, management and treatment, metabolic and chronic complications Autoimmune Disorders: Systemic lupus erythematosus, Scleroderma, Guillain-Barre' Syndrome Focus for each condition or group of conditions will be on the occupational therapy intervention guidelines. Study-unit Aims To meet new challenges in the assessment and treatment of acute and sub-acute medical disorders. To integrate medical theory with occupational therapy practice, as applicable, using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework : Domain and process. To identify areas of occupation that have been affected by a medical disorder. To review client factors, performance skills and performance patterns that have been disrupted in acute and sub-acute medical care. To identify the activity demand issues experienced by patients in acute and sub-acute medical care whilst taking into consideration one's context and immediate environment. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Describe the signs and symptoms associated with the conditions discussed in class; Demonstrate a basic understanding of the nature of diseases/disorders including pathology, course and expected prognosis; Outline basic medical treatment options; Outline the OT treatment aims and goals for a particular condition. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Use the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework when reviewing acute and sub-acute medical conditions; Identify which model of practice/frame of reference is applicable to a particular condition depending on which areas of occupation have been affected; Set appropriate occupational therapy treatment goals prior to planning an intervention programme; Plan a suitable treatment programme, using the most appropriate techniques and contexts.
