DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to give insight into the different leadership styles, differentiate between a leader and a manager and also explore team management. It will look at organisational skills and discuss self care, work-life balance and stress management. Professional issues such as registration and regulation of the profession, ethical behaviour and scope of practice will also be explained.

The challenges concerned with setting up an Occupational Therapy Service will be discussed including the requirements such as resources, supplies/equipment, budgeting and procurement. Professional identity and conflicting situations one can face will be looked at including how to display assertive professional behaviour, how to deal with inappropriate referrals and how to deal with overlap of roles and boundaries. The last part of this study-unit will be dedicated to communication skills, building confidence in public speaking skills and marketing of the profession.

This study-unit will provide essential tools required by Occupational Therapists embarking on their career. This study-unit encourages participation through group activities, presentations and role play.

Study-unit Aims:

- To familiarise students with basic management, organisational skills and leadership styles;
- To introduce students to professional issues and behaviour;
- To ensure students understand work-life balance and self care; and
- To develop a professional identity and increase confidence in public speaking.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- differentiate between management and leadership skills;
- discuss professional and ethical issues; and
- explain work life balance and strategies for stress management.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyse tasks required for problem solving and decision making;
- carry out presentations and produce a marketing plan; and
- identify and plan requirements to establish a new service.
