TITLE Aspects of Person-Environment Fit in relation to Occupational Performance

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Occupational Therapy

DESCRIPTION Based on the premise that occupation is an innate human need and a basic requirement of human existence, this study-unit will explore the different occupations that a person is engaged in throughout the life span, in relation to the different contexts of occupational performance. It will focus on the theoretical knowledge required by occupational therapists to adapt living environments to accommodate the individual needs of their clients.

This will include the environmental adaptations carried out to prevent musculoskeletal injuries as well as environmental adaptations that are meant to maximise the individuals' level of function following illness or disability.

This study-unit will explore the process involved in clinical decision making with regards to environmental adaptations. Emphasis will be made on the occupational profile of the clients and activity analysis of the occupations pursued. It will also provide a brief overview of concepts such as reach, clearance, posture, precision and strength. This knowledge will then be used to match the clients’ abilities and needs with the occupational demands and the environmental context of occupational performance. In this way students will learn how the occupational therapist addresses the clients’ situation in a holistic manner so that any recommendations for environmental adaptation reflect the individualised needs of the clients.

Study-unit Aims:

- To understand that occupation is an innate need of every human being and to appreciate the influence of the environment and context on occupational performance;
- To acknowledge the importance of activity analysis to determine the physical, cognitive, social and psychological demands of an activity, prior to recommending any environmental adaptations;
- To acknowledge that there are different alternatives to adapt the same type of environment;
- To understand the clinical reasoning and thorough evaluation involved prior to giving any environmental adaptations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Analyse the physical, social and psychological demands of an activity, and relate this to the occupational context in which the activity will be carried out;
- Understand the role of the occupational therapist in recommending environmental adaptations with the aim of facilitating occupational performance following injury or disability;
- Understand the importance of environmental evaluation and adaptation with the aim of preventing musculoskeletal injuries.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Analyse different environmental contexts congruent with the clients' occupational profile, to be able to recommend the required environmental adaptations in order to address individualised need;
- Explain the clinical reasoning behind any environmental adaptation recommended.
