DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the students to the research process under the supervision and guidance of an academic supervisor. The final written project, a dissertation, will comprise of the following chapters: introduction, literature review, methodology, results and discussion. The chosen project must be of relevance to the occupational therapy profession, must make use of appropriate methodology and must be achievable within the available resources and time-frames.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of the special project are to:

- Define a relevant area of investigation which is of interest to self and to the occupational therapy profession.
- Review the relevant literature around the selected area.
- Develop and identify the appropriate research questions to address area of interest.
- Develop the appropriate methodology to address these questions.
- Collect data.
- Report findings in an appropriate way.
- Discuss findings within the wider context of the occupational therapy domain.
- Draw conclusions and recommendations from the study.
- Present all the above work as the completed dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appreciate and understand the relevance of the research process.
- Develop an understanding in their area of inquiry and appreciate this within the wider context of occupational therapy practice.
- Be aware of ethical issues in health care research
- Critically reflect on the learning experience

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Frame an area of interest and review the related literature.
- Understand the various methodological approaches and be able to select and provide a rationale for their research strategy.
- Conduct a small scale study which would include data collection and data analysis.
- Present their work in the completed dissertation using the appropriate academic language, citing and referencing.
