DESCRIPTION | This study-unit constitutes the actual creation of a Masters dissertation in occupational therapy by research and all that this entails. Nominally this requires the identification of a research question(s) that addresses a recognised gap in the knowledge of the profession, which could have local or international significance The candidate develops this research question starting from interest in a particular area and a thorough engagement with significant literature. From this starting point the candidate identifies and puts into practice an apposite methodology and method/s with an identified participant population, after being granted the necessary ethical approval by the relevant research committee. The research undertaken will be reported in a dissertation that will be submitted by the candidate at the end of the programme. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to enable a post-graduate candidate in occupational therapy to apply an appropriate research methodology with the requisite level of rigour to an identified area of interest. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify a gap in the knowledge base of the profession and/or an area of interest that could benefit from an empirical study; - Develop a research question; - Undertake a review of the literature; - Identify and select an appropriate research methodology and methods; - Extend professional knowledge as a result of the analysis of data and discussion of findings in the light of extant literature in the field. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Refine skills in accessing, organising, reviewing and critiquing literature; - Develop advanced skills in the application of research methods with an identified population; - Develop skills in data analysis; - Develop skills in reflection and reflexivity as these are pertinent to a research undertaking; - Continue to develop and refine skills in academic writing and reporting of research. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Pre-requisite Qualifications: B.Sc (Honours) Occupational Therapy Co-requisite Study-units: HSC5111 **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. |
